John Philip Carlin, Sr. Obituary
Major John P. Carlin, known affectionately as Phil, USMC (Ret.), age 80, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2024, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late James William Carlin, Sr. and Bernice Rogers Carlin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother James William Carlin, Jr.
Phil dedicated his life to serving his country and his family with unwavering strength and compassion. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Margaret; his sister, Lois Lugaila and her husband Bill of Coraopolis, PA; his children, John Jr., Stephen (Katie), Eric (Ashley), Matthew, and Ann; his six cherished grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A proud Marine, Phil was a decorated hero of the Vietnam War, recognized with numerous awards including the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with the 1960 device.
In 2009, he was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action. As a Forward Observer with Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, during Operation Scotland II, Phil exemplified the courage and dedication of a Marine officer. Despite critical injuries, he continued to command and control supporting fires, contributing immeasurably to his unit’s efforts and the mission’s success.
Phil’s legacy is not only marked by his heroism in combat but also by his role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family will remember him for his profound integrity and the love he had for his family.
Major Carlin’s life was a testament to the values of duty, honor, and courage. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and remembered as a true American hero.
The family will receive friends for a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 1750 Chase Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45223, on Monday, May 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Phil will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a date and time to be determined.
